Greece 2015 Day 1 – Athens

We are staying in the Plaka area of Athens which is close to the Acropolis. Our hotel aptly named “Hotel Plaka” is perfect with an amazing view of the Acropolis from the rooftop bar. They had a fantastic breakfast buffet and each morning the person who checks what room you are in also finds out what you would like to do for the day and gives advice. She had a map on which she plotted out a tour for us and it was perfect.

The walk up the Acropolis looks intimidating from far away but was actually very easy. The views are spectacular and we stopped so much on the way up that you barely notice the climb. My wishes for spring flowers have come true and instead of the dry rocky climb I imagined some areas are covered with poppies, daisies and a thousand other flowers. HAPPY.
After the tour of the Acropolis we went to the Acropolis Museum. It is really well done, beautiful architecturally. The top floor is a life size model of the Parthenon with stainless columns. Much of the exterior decoration has been brought into the museum to protect it from pollution and erosion. It is placed in its exact matching position on the inside replica. We could not take pictures but it is now one of my favourite museums. You can see a picture on this page. I could have snuck a picture but I felt really sorry for the guards who are after the tourists from morning to night to put their cameras away.

All this was followed by a great supper in Plaka.
